Old Bomb Shelter, Fresh New Look

Is it fair to say that people don’t build or buy bomb shelters like they did a few decades ago? I would guess so. But as the fears of nuclear war loomed around the world between the 50s and the 80s there were a lot of people who truly believed that a bomb shelter was an emergency preparedness necessity. So they dug holes, built concrete fortresses and cleared the bats out of caves to protect themselves, just in case all hell broke loose. Lucky for the world it never did. Well, I guess you could say that’s debatable. Yet bomb and fallout shelters were built in countries all over the world as people reacted to the possibility of a serious threat to their communities, even if that threat never materialized. The result is literally thousands of bomb and fallout shelters that were built, used in one form or another, and then abandoned. While the state of the world we live in seems unstable, unpredictable and often pretty scary, I’m sure a significant amount of today’s younger generation might think the idea of a bomb shelter is a thing of the past. But as it turns out, bomb shelters and emergency doomsday bunkers are making a resurgence, and it’s not what you might think. Abandoned bomb shelters, fall out shelters and bunkers all around the world are making a resurgence as designers, architects and even people looking for summer vacation homes are snatching up these structures and turning them into functional, and even livable spaces.Take a few minutes and take a look at these interesting bomb shelter redevelopment projects. Although it’s likely not many of us will ever have a shelter quite as elaborate as these to store our survival kits in, it’s yet another reminder that the spirit of creativity has the potential to turn something like emergency preparedness into a functional work of art.As a community of people who understand that a little ingenuity can go a long way when it comes to customizing an emergency preparedness survival kit we’re almost always looking to discover interesting and ingenious methods for making the most out of what we have. —Jared Matkin—Jared Matkin is a Salt Lake City based freelance writer and outdoor enthusiast who is continually on the lookout for innovative and usable products designed to help improve the way we live.
