Couponing for Emergency Preparedness

There is a new show on TLC called Extreme Couponing where shoppers will go into the grocery store and walk out with thousands of dollars of merchandise for a fraction of the price, this doesn’t happen every time but saving hundreds of dollars does! When these shoppers find a good deal on non perishable items they buy them in bulk. Now what does this TV show have to do with emergency preparedness? Using coupons to build up your survival gear is a great way to make sure you are prepared without breaking the bank. There are a lot of sites online like www.frugalcouponliving.com or www.freebies2deals.com that have loads of coupons, and even more sites that tell you about deals stores are having on top of the coupons. Some groceries stores even offer days where they will double or triple your coupons allowing you to get some items for free! One of the best ways to save money is to go to stores that already have an item on sale and use a manufactures coupon on top of that. Some stores like Target are really good about letting you do that; I have been able to do this before at Target, but I can’t guarantee that all stores are the same so check with your local stores and find out their policy.Sunday newspapers are a great way to get the manufactures coupons, in our area we received the coupon section for free and did not have to pay for the Sunday paper at all, if you don’t want to pay for the paper see if your area has a similar program, or ask your neighbors for their extra coupons. Making a file with coupons you will use is a great way to stay organized. Know what items you keep in your survival gear and pay special attention to those coupons. Diapers are a great example of an item you may keep in your storage that you can find great deals on with store specials and then use manufactures coupons as well. Dish soap, personal hygiene items, paper goods, and any non perishable foods are great items to use coupons on to save money while making sure your survival gear stays well stocked.Being prepared does not have to cost you lots of money, start building your emergency preparedness storage up slowly and save as much money as you can. It is important to be prepared but not at the cost of your every day comfort. Just start with a wish list of items you want in your storage and as you see coupons and sales see if you can afford to purchase the item. This may take some time to get the hang of because there is some seasonality to certain items but it is a great habit to get into.—Breanna Legler—
